If you are a smoker who is looking for a way to better health, quit smoking…it’s as simple as that. Simple as it may be however, it’s amazing how many smokers simply disregard that bit of wisdom. This in spite of the overwhelming evidence that smoking is bad news, no two ways about it, and both smokers that quit and people that never took up the habit to begin with can look forward to a healthier life

In the rest of this article, we will outline some of the major diseases that you can avoid by dropping the habit in the hopes of inspiring you to good health quit smoking…

Cardiovascular disease

This is by far one of the most common causes of death due to smoking. The condition is a result of the hardening of the arteries over several years, due to the buildup of cholesterol and fat deposits, which causes the arteries to narrow and become blocked. This greatly increases the risk of blood clot formation.

The narrowing of the arteries or atherosclerosis can actually be caused by many factors, although smoking will put a person at greater risk for contracting the condition. This is because smoking speeds up the hardening and narrowing of the arteries. The process starts earlier in smokers, and they are two to four times more likely to experience blood clot formation.

Blood clots are particularly damaging to the heart and the brain, and the formation of clots in these organs is in fact the most common cause of sudden death. When blood clots form in the arteries–in a condition known as coronary thrombosis–there is a risk of a heart attack. Smoking causes more than 30% of such heart attacks.

Cancer

Smokers are at a higher risk for getting cancer than non-smokers, with cancers of the lung, the throat, and the mouth being some of the most common ones. If you need any more reasons to quirt smoking, you should be aware that these types of cancers rarely occur in non-smokers.

There is no getting around the fact that there is a clear link between smoking and lung cancer. In fact, as many as 90% of all lung cancer cases are caused by smoking. Another interesting realization is that without smokers, lung cancer would actually be a rare occurrence. Only 0.5% of non-smokers develop lung cancer.

As many as 10% of moderate smokers and almost 20% of heavy smokers will contract lung cancer. The risk also grows considerably the higher the cigarette consumption is, the longer you have smoked, the deeper you inhale the smoke, and the earlier you began to smoke.

Smokers are also at greater risk of contracting mouth cancer. In fact, smokers are four times more likely to get mouth cancer than non-smokers, with such cancers typically beginning under the tongue or on the lips.

Some other types of cancer that smokers are putting themselves at risk for are:
bladder cancer, cancer of the esophagus, cancer of the kidney, cancer of the pancreas, and cancer of the cervix.
